This is a lot of seemingly random points, but really, Ronda fought just the way she was trained. Even when her coach throws a punch at her, he throws it to the side of her head so she doesn't even have to build up any reaction to get through her padwork. And she was told to never take a backstep so she typically stayed in range with her hands down to get hit. Her legs started to move with her body wanting to get out of that danger zone, but her will is so built up to never go back she just stayed in place and kept getting hit. Another thing that explains a lot about her is that her body type is kapha pitta. That body type usually deals with stress by either becoming angry at someone else or completely going into seclusion away from everyone. That body type is also known to hold onto bad relationships for too long just like her with all her crazy exes and her coach. Even though everyone told her it was bad, she hung on. But the thing for her to do is ENJOY martial arts again when she's ready. Winning obscured this but a head coach should have been on it. Even maintaining only one level of obtaining the clinch left her more vulnerable. <br /><br />Contrast this to the responsible deffense of GSP or many others. <br /><br />Ronda truly went 12-0 with her many years of elite judo/grappling training and heart. <br /><br />Edmond has failed to produce anything close to the best fighter Ronda could be, but also he has not looked after her safety. As a Judoka, I know there are philo...Dr Ann Maria,<br /><br />As a Judoka, I know there are philosophies you have to fighting that don't really run congruent with other martial arts... particularly brawling (striking).<br />Your mentality is to use your opponents energy to your advantage.<br />It may be just me, but watching that match made me feel like Ronda was a fish out of water in the way she accepted Amanda Nunes energy.<br />I know you rarely (if ever) see this but couldn't she have trained to 'catch' Nunes by one of her long arms, when she threw a straight punch? We see martial artists catch kicks all the time.<br />I'm reminded of when Ronda caught Cat Zingano coming in with the knee. She accepted her energy and pulled her in.<br />I realize that this isn't a usual tactic to use when faced with a jab/straight. A boxing coach (such as Edmond) would teach to match strike for strike.<br />Nevertheless, Ronda has such a unique skillset that has always seemed very improvisational.<br />Instead of counterpunching, why not work on catching the arm?? <br />I thought about this because when I played football I would always catch the arm of any runner who tried to use the stiff arm. It worked every time and I'd pull them to the ground easily.<br />I know that it's not so easy in MMA, but if Ronda could have worked on catching the arm I feel she would have been able to control Nunes's energy. You remind me of my own mother, tough and a straight to the point. <br /><br />As a child (33), I want nothing more than my mothers support. Nobody else's support really matters, just hers. I think you should support her coming back into the ring and competing. What we saw last week, wasn't her. Physically, it was the best she ever looked for a match. Emotionally, I didn't feel like it was the Ronda we know.<br /><br />I think Ronda needs to face her demons in the ring before she can ever leave the ring and go about her life post UFC. I don't want her ever asking what if in her life. Her MMA story shouldn't end like this. I'll be damned if people call her manafactured fighter, a media creation.
